Tsunami Zone Volunteers

These are extracts from a series of images that I shot while volunteering with my wife and other volunteers two months after the 2011 Japan earthquake and tsunami.

The area is Ishinomaki, an area that was particularly hard hit by the tsunami. In some places the water reached a height of over 70 metres and left an enormous area devastated. Thousands died, and thousands more were left displaced as their houses were either completely destroyed or left unliveable. For days afterwards people remained cut off with virtually no food or drinkable water. The scenes of the destruction and stories from survivors moved many people to go to the area and offer their help with the clean up and reconstruction. These images represent my experience from that time.
